Open water swimmers EJC/LEN cup welcome in Hoorn!

On Saturday 31 July and Sunday 1 August 2010 the European Open Water Swimming Junior Championships and the final leg of the European Open Water Swimming Cup take place in Hoorn, The Netherlands. It is the first time our country hosts the EJC (5 km, and 3 km team pursuit) and the second time for the LEN –cup (10 km, combined with the Dutch NC).

On behalf of the organization, FDN ‘Ter Rede van Hoorn’ and the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation (KNZB), we are honored to welcome you. The competitions will take place in the former Zuiderzee (sea), now Markermeer (lake), before the 16th century harbor. A description of the location, the venues and the complete programme can be found at www.terredevanhoorn.nl .

Hoorn is a scenic city, over 650 years old and the home of 70,000 inhabitants. In the Golden Age (1600 – 1700) Hoorn was a city of importance and wealth. Please check the website www.hoorn.nl for further information. It’s an experience!

Open water swimming is a growing sport in The Netherlands, also in Hoorn. The fact that Olympic and World Champions Maarten van der Weijden and Edith van Dijk did swim here no doubt contributes to its popularity.

The competitions will take place Saturday (start at 13:00 hrs, 5 km EJC) and Sunday (start at 12:00 hrs, LEN/NC, and 15:00 hrs, team pursuit EJC). The Royal Dutch Swimming Federation (KNZB) handles the final entry forms, and the transportation and accommodation forms. Accommodation will be available at four local hotels, subject to availability. Please check www.knzb.nl for further information and forms.

We will welcome our international guests at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 July. The Dutch Railways provide free transportation  from the airport to Hoorn. The journey takes about 60 minutes. In Hoorn we provide free transport for our guests; taxi buses will be available for transport between station, hotels and swimming locations, on request. You will receive further information on arrival.

We offer training possibilities free of charge on Friday evening, 19:00 hrs, at the Markermeer and on Saturday morning, 10:00 hrs, at the indoor swimming pool De Waterhoorn (www.waterhoorn.nl) or outdoor De Wijzend (www.wijzend.nl).

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that on Saturday a 5 kilometer race will be held in the Markermeer, starting at 11:00  hrs. You are invited to participate free of charge. Entries are welcome in our VIP tent, until 10:30 hrs.

In our competition area you will find a VIP tent for swimmers and officials. We provide a tent for EJC and LEN cup swimmers. Both tents are near the swimming lanes, so participants can prepare themselves in favourable conditions. Briefings and press conferences will be held at our VIP tent on location. Briefings on Saturday at 11.00 hrs, and Sunday at 10:00 hrs. Press conferences on Saturday at 15:00, and Sunday at 15:00 and 16:00 hrs.

All co-operators of the federation are eager to make their guests have a wonderful weekend. We look forward to welcoming you in Hoorn; it will be something very special for all of us!
